A password-protected directory or area is a folder that can be accessed only if a username and a password are provided, so no unauthorized people could check out its content. This function can be used for the primary folder of a given site or just for a specific subfolder based on your requirements. For example, if you are creating a new Internet site and you do not want people to see it before it's ready, you have to restrict the access to it completely, whereas if you want only some people to be able to access certain files, you may password-protect only a certain folder, while the rest of the site may be seen by everybody. Either way, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear in the event that the login details the visitor enters aren't accurate. Even a direct link to a file will not work so long as any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Web Hosting

Creating a password-protected area will take just a couple of mouse clicks and a few seconds if you host your sites within a web hosting account with us. You won't need to do anything difficult - you will have to choose a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it has to be protected, and then to input the login name and password that will be used to access that folder. When a number of people require their own login credentials, there won't be a problem to make several different usernames with access to the same folder. All protected folders will appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this feature is active. If you would like to disable the security feature for any folder, you can deactivate it from the very same section of the CP in which you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you shall be able to protect any content you have uploaded through our protection tool. Its interface is as simple and intuitive as that of the Hepsia Control Panel it's part of, so you'll not have to input any code at any time. You will simply need to select one of the domains/subdomains which you have inside the website hosting account and to choose which folder needs to be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. You may then type in the username and the password, which will be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you'll be all set. The protection will be enabled immediately, so anybody who attempts to access the freshly secured folder will have to enter the right login info. If various people should be able to access exactly the same content, you could make a separate username for each of them.
